Like all other lodges in Zambia Waterberry works hard to contribute to the community. The Tukongote School was started in a locally built mud building in 2010 and this March opened the Tukongote Community School – a purpose built school designed to take children from pre-school all the way through to Grade 7.
At the finish of Grade 7 children will either be helped into a skill (we already have some apprentice builders training with a local builder) or will help the academic stars to move on to high school through sponsorship of individuals to school in Kazungula.
Their recent newsletter talked of the difficulties bright children have in obtaining places in higher schools to take them through to Grade 12 (the equivalent of A Levels). Schooling is not available so they need to board, fees, uniforms and books are expensive, and even completing the Grade 12 course does not qualify children to take the Grade 12 exams – this is an additional high fee.
Waterberry have a number of staff who have completed their Grade 12 schooling but were never able to afford the exam fee. Their adult skills centre, due to open in October, will help them revise to take the exams if they wish.
